Weekly Tip

Free Public WiFi is available all over the place.  Airports, coffee shops, and libraries to name a few.  But did you know that connecting to those wireless networks could pose a risk to your personal information?

Wireless networks that are open don't use any encryption method.  All data sent is in clear text for anyone with a little know how and the right software to see.  But what information can be seen?  The username and password entered to access your bank account?  Yep!  The credit card number used to purchase those shoes?  That too!

Here are some tips to remember when connected to public wifi.  Don't enter usernames and passwords for your bank accounts, email, social media sites, or anything else you want keep private.  Also, save your shopping for when you are at home or on a trusted network.  As an alternative, you can subscribe to a personal VPN service to add a layer of encryption while connected to public wifi.
