A newer and very destructive version of ransomware is making it’s way around. The ransomware is called Cryptolocker and is contracted by opening an infected email attachment. Once your computer is infected, the ransomware will scan your computer and encrypt many types of files (documents, PDFs, photos, videos). Once the files are encrypted, the only way to recover those files are to restore from backup.
So how do you protect yourself? Don’t open unknown email attachments. Keep your PC up to date on patches. To be safe, backup your documents, photos, etc. If you do suspect an infection, give TradeMark Technologies a call.
Last week we worked on a computer infected with Cryptolocker. We were able to eradicate the infection, but it's currently impossible to decrypt the files affected. Luckily, our customer had us develop a backup strategy a few months earlier, and we were able to simply restore files affected.
Update 8/6 7:30p CDT
As of a few hours ago, researchers have recovered CryptoLocker's private key and can now decrypt files. Follow this link for details. As always, feel free to contact us with questions.
